Tried It Tuesday: Foldable Assessments

I'm super excited to share what something new I tried in my classroom last week!  In math, we've been working on geometry concepts by watching Learn Zillion and Jennifer Findley's Foldables.  After all my students had finished their geometric terms foldable, the angles sort, the types of triangles, parallel and perpendicular lines foldables, I told my kids we would be having a quiz the next day!

I knew I didn't want this quiz to be a "normal" quiz.  I wanted them to have to apply what they had learned from the past week.  I used this foldable from Jennifer's fourth grade Geometry foldables set to assess their understanding of parallel and perpendicular lines in 2-D figures.

They had to cut out 9 different shapes and sort them based on the presence of parallel and perpendicular lines. I told them that they were allowed to use any of their notes but not their table mates.
Cutting out all the shapes.
Gluing the shapes where they think they belong.
This was a very informative quiz for me a teacher.  Overall, the grades were not that great.  Even some of my higher students got poor grades.  We spent quite a bit of time going over the correct answers the next day.  I did take these grades, but I do plan on giving them some other opportunities to show me that they can identify parallel and perpendicular line in 2-D shapes.

What are some unusual ways you assess your student?
I'm linking up with Holly over at Fourth Grade Flipper  today for Tried It Tuesday!

Make sure you go head over there to see what everyone tried this week!

  1. Love your idea of a non-traditional assessment. So often students can really share what they know but not taking a paper/pencil test!! I'm going to try to do someone similar in the next few weeks! Glad I found your link on "Tried it Tuesday!"

  2. I have never seen Learn Zillion. Oh my gosh, what a great site! I saw so many things I could use. I like the idea of using non-traditional assessments. I get stuck in a rut sometimes. This motivates me to find new ways.
    Thanks,

  3. I love using LearnZillion. It's best to go in order with the lessons though or it sometimes gets confusing. I love using Study Jams videos too! I found a list of all of the videos for free on TpT this summer and it helps me keep track of which ones we have watched. xo

  4. I bookmarked LearnZillion to check out. It sounds amazing! I love the foldables activity and this is always a difficult concept for the students when classifying polygons. Thanks for linking up! :)

  5. Learnzillion--new to me, so thank you. The foldable activity looks great--I just think they're such a good way for students to learn.
Side note: what do you use to put your blog address on your photos? I'm always curious people do it on their laptop or phone.

    Thanks
